We have made the decision to sell extended product warranties at the cost price we pay our insurer – in other words we are selling them at cost, we will not make 1p profit when we sell them to our customers.
Why have we made that decision?
There is mixed opinion about extended warranties, you the customer and the consumer press have questioned the value of extended warranties, are they worth the money? Will my product break down? They are expensive. We will answer those questions for you
I agree they are too expensive, that’s why we have decided to drastically reduce the cost to make them great value for money, We also don’t like the way they are sold by some retailers, aggressive selling techniques or direct phone calls, clearly some retailers need the sky high profit margins they make by selling warranties. We don’t believe this is the right thing to do, we have never in the past and will never aggressively try and sell extended warranties, that’s a promise.
Regarding value, here is an example, if you purchased a Range Cooker for £899, if you refer to the Compare Extended warranties website you will note that the typical 5 year extended warranty price is £189, that’s 21% of the value of the product. The Co-op price for a 5 year Warranty is only £48 – only £12 per year. 5% of the value of the product. Consider the average call out and labour charge (excluding parts) for a range cooker is circa £70 - £90 our price of £48 for an extra 4 years warranty is exceptional value – and the main reason why it is excellent value – we are not making any profit on the warranty.
Customers must also look into what your policy covers, this can vary depending on the Retailer. Some extended warranties just offer the bare minimum to keep their cost price down. What the Co-op have done is to improve our policy, we also include, breakdown caused by Accidental Damage, up to £150 Food Loss cover, on Freezer breakdowns, and we will give you a new product if your item requires 3 repairs in your warranty period.
There is a chance that your product will break down in the future before it has exhausted its natural life span, (it is a working product just like a car, they do incur faults) the key question here is when? Firstly your product is guaranteed for usually 1 year, any faults found during this guarantee period and you are completely covered. After that period if a fault occurs generally you will not be covered and any repair will be at your cost (unless you can prove that the product had an inherent fault at the time of purchase) so this is where the extended warranty comes in, it is similar to buying house contents or pet plan Insurance, you may or may not need it.
Some products will last for years and not have any breakdowns or faults, where some products may break down after the first years guarantee and require a repair, depending on the product and machine sometimes this can be expensive. Where consumers rightly believe the product they purchase should last for years, this is true they should, however the distinction here is sometimes they may need a repair to fix a fault, this doesn’t mean that the product is now useless just because it has broken down.
Your Statutory Rights
Your Statutory Rights will not be affected when you buy an Extended Warranty from The Co-op Electrical. These rights include the right to claim a refund, repair, or replacement for up to six years if your electrical goods were not of satisfactory quality or fit for purpose when they were sold to you.
Extended Warranties may be available from other providers. You may also be covered under your household contents insurance or other policies that you may hold.
When can I buy a Co-op Extended Warranty?
An extended warranty does not have to be purchased at the same time as an electrical product. You can buy an extended warranty at any time prior to the expiry of your manufacturers guarantee.
Changing Your Mind
We hope you are happy with the cover this policy provides, however, if after reading this policy it does not meet with your requirements or you have simply changed your mind please return the policy and policy confirmation to the administrator within 45 days of purchasing the cover and we will arrange to cancel your policy. A full refund is subject to no claims being recorded against the policy.
Cancellation and termination rights
You may cancel your policy at any time after the initial 45 day “Changing Your Mind” period. Where you cancel your policy after the initial 45 days covered by the “Changing Your Mind” section of your policy the administrator will provide a pro rata refund calculated on the number of days remaining on cover. Financial Protection: Meeting the obligations under your Extended Warranty
Your policy has been arranged by Pacifica Home Services Ltd with Amtrust Europe Limited. Amtrust Europe Limited is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). You may be entitled to compensation from the scheme, if they cannot meet their obligations. This depends on the type of business and the circumstances of the claim. Whether or not an extended warranty offered by the supplier will be terminated in the event of a claim being made
Your policy will not terminate after a claim and if a replacement product is provided, we will transfer the balance of your policy to the replacement product.
